Winner of the 2014 Indonesia Super League, Persib were the defending champions, as the 2015 Indonesia Super League was abandoned midway due to FIFA suspension while the 2016 Indonesia Soccer Championship A was not counted as an official league.
Bhayangkara won their first Liga 1 title and Indonesian top-flight title overall, with one match to spare following a 3–1 away won over Madura United on 8 November 2017.[5]
In December 2016, PSSI and the league operator planned to use foreign referees for the 2017 competition. The use of foreign referee was intended to improve the quality of the competition.[6] However, two weeks before the league starts, this plan was cancelled.[7]
After a wide criticism, protest and dissatisfaction towards the local referees during the first round of the season,[8][9] PSSI revisited the idea. On 18 July 2017, PSSI and the league operator officially announced the use of foreign referees and assistant referees in select matches for the second round.[10] There were two sets of officials (consisted of 1 referee and 2 assistant referees), each coming from Australia, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and Japan.[11]
League operator also introduced several new regulations, such as requiring clubs to contract a minimum of five U-23 local players with three of them having to play as starting lineup minimum of 45 minutes in a match, restricting clubs to have more than two players older than 35 years old, and increasing the maximum number of substitutions to five for each team in a match.[12]
On 30 July 2017, in preparation for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, all regulations concerning under-23 players were suspended.[13] Later on 31 August 2017, PSSI decided to extend the suspension of all regulations concerning under-23 players until end of season.[14]
FIFA approved the five substitution rule on 12 April 2017.[15][16] However, the two additional substitutions (in addition of three substitutions, in accordance to FIFA Laws of the Game) were only allowed for U-23 players.[16]
Eighteen teams competed in the league – all teams from the abandoned 2015 Indonesia Super League. As such, no promoted team competed this season.

Football Association of Indonesia or PSSI restricted the number of foreign players strictly to four per team, including one slot for a player from AFC countries, and one slot for a marquee player,[89] a player that was required to have played in a top European league (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Primeira Liga, Eredivisie, Süper Lig, etc.) in the last 8 years, or a player that have played in the last three editions of the FIFA World Cup. Teams can use all the foreign players at once.[90]

← 2017 |
The 2018 Liga 1 (known as the Go-JekLiga 1 for sponsorship reasons[1]) was the second season of Liga 1 and the ninth season of the top-flight Indonesian professional league for association football clubs since the establishment of Indonesian Super League in 2008. The season started on 23 March 2018 and finished on 9 December 2018.[2]
Bhayangkara were the defending champions. Persebaya, PSMS, and PSIS played as promoted teams from the 2017 Liga 2.
The pre-season transfer window was opened between 10 February and 5 April 2018 while the mid-season transfer window was opened between 5 July and 3 August 2018.[3]
Persija won their first Liga 1 title, and second Indonesian top-flight title overall on the last matchday.[4]
Player registration was divided into two periods. The first period opened from 10 February 2018 and closes on 5 April 2018.[5] Then the second period was done on 5 July to 3 August 2018. Clubs could register at least 18 players and a maximum of 30 players. The club was also required to contract at least seven local U-23 players (born on or after 1 January 1996). Unlike last season, U-23 players were not required to play in one game.[6]
Persija and Bali United got privileges related to player quota. Both were allowed to add three local players with no age limit, following their participation in the 2018 AFC Cup representing Indonesia.[7]
Unlike last season, the league operator ensured that they did not use any foreign referees for this season.[8]
Eighteen teams competed in the league – the top fifteen teams from the previous season and three teams promoted from the Liga 2. The new teams this season were Persebaya, PSMS, and PSIS, who replaced Persegres, Persiba, and Semen Padang.[9]
